Thank you for this great essay. Let me add my take on the root cause of these pandemic of coups in Afirca.
In Niger, a very poor people in a rich nation, endowed with rich reserves of rare earth metals, uranium, tin and gold, is being exploited by foreign powers for the manufacture of nuclear energy and high-tech sectors, a junta took over on 26 July 2023.
Any unconstitutional power grab must not be condoned as long as the constitution is a people’s constitution and not some parachuted democratic exercise. The epidemic of coup d’états in Africa (more than a hundred successful ones since independence), highlights its vulnerability and political instability, leading Nigeriens to show their allegiance to the junta that have replaced the 'elected' heads of state.
While decolonisation has been achieved with great stride, former African colonies never had the opportunity to develop their vast African natural wealth. Nonetheless, what is interesting is Niger has been in the spotlight of world politics and media even more than Ukraine. What is the cause for this international uproar in Africa’s poorest nation with rich in mineral wealth?
The military coup in Niger is a reflection of the Global South movements that are keen to lift their populace from conflicts and poverty and herald the emergence of a multipolar world against the backdrop of a new Cold War and geoeconomic and geopolitical conflict between the West and the East. Given the serious interest in joining the BRICS consortium being held in South Africa right now, the West must adapt to the new reality instead of seeking to undermine it.
