AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION (AUC)

The AUC is the African Union (AU)’s secretariat whose main functions include among others, representing the AU and defending its interests under the guidance of and as mandated by the Assembly and Executive Council, acting as the custodian of the AU Constitutive Act and all other OAU/AU legal instruments, managing the budget and resources of the AU and providing operational support for all AU organs.

AFRICAN UNION PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL (AU PSC)

The AU PSC is the AU’s organ in charge of decision-making in relation with prevention, management and resolution of conflicts. It is the main pillar of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the framework established for promoting peace, security and stability in the continent.

1. African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACmHPR)

The ACmHPR is the main organ in charge of overseeing the implementation and interpret the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Banjul Charter). The ACmHPR is charged with ensuring the promotion and protection of human rights in Africa as well as the interpretation of the Banjul Charter.

2. African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACtHPR)

The ACtHPR is a judicial organ established with the purpose of complimenting and reinforcing the functions of the ACmHPR. Whereas the ACmHPR is only mandated to make recommendations, the ACtHPR has the mandate to make binding decisions over all issues submitted to it.


3. African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC)

ACERWC is the principal organ of the AU mandated with overseeing the implementation and interpreting the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC). The ACERWC mainly functions to ensure protection and promotion of all rights enshrined under the ACRWC.


4. AU Commission on International Law (AUCIL)

The AUCIL is an advisory organ of the AU whose main objectives include undertaking activities related to codification and progressive development of international law in Africa, assisting in the revision of existing treaties and conducting studies on legal issues which are of interest to AU Member States.

5. AU Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC)

Established in 2009, the AUABC is an organ with the mandate of promoting and encouraging State Parties to the Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, to adopt measures and actions aimed at preventing, detecting, punishing and eradicating corruption and related offences in Africa.

REGIONAL ECONOMIC COMMUNITIES (RECs)

RECs are regionally instituted bodies whose main purpose is facilitating the economic integration among States within individual regions and through the wider African Economic Community (AEC). RECs are also increasingly observed for their involvement in coordinating AU Member States’ interests in issues relating to security, development and governance.


1. Arab Maghreb Union (UAM)

Composed of five Member States namely, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia, the UMA is one of the African RECs established with the aim of achieving progress and prosperity as well as preserving peace, justice and equality in the concerned countries of the region.

2. Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

ECOWAS is a REC instituted with the purpose of enhancing economic stability in the western region, promoting cooperation and integration among its members and contributing towards the development of Africa. States members to ECOWAS are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

3. Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS)

ECCAS is another one of the African RECs whose main objectives consist of maintaining economic stability among its members, achieving collective autonomy and raising the living standard of its population. ECCAS Member States are: Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Congo Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda and São Tomé and Príncipe.

4. Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)

COMESA is a REC which is made up of 21 Member States namely, Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. COMESA’s basic purpose is to promote peace, security and stability as well as joint economic development its among Member States, in addition to creating an enabling environment for foreign, cross-border and domestic investment as to ensure sustainable growth and development of its Member States.

5. East African Community (EAC)

EAC consists of six east African States: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. The Community serves the main purpose of broadening eastern Africa’s economic, political, social and cultural integration and by doing so, improving the lives of the people of the region.
