Dr. Biruk Shewadeg, a research consultant at Amani Africa and Assistant Professor of African Studies, is a dedicated pan-Africanist with a profound interest in state-society relations. His research spans peace and security in Africa, emphasizing the crucial role of local institutions in fostering sustainable peace. Dr. Biruk is particularly committed to reimagining African epistemologies by grounding them in the continent's unique realities, especially in areas of peacebuilding and security.

Dr. Biruk’s academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy (2011), followed by a Master’s degree in African Studies (2013) and a Ph.D. in African Studies (2024), all earned at Addis Ababa University. This robust educational foundation has honed his intellectual rigor and deepened his understanding of the African context. His scholarship bridges academic inquiry with practical engagement, advancing the African agenda across national, regional, and international forums.
