Virtual Seminar on the Role of A3 States in advancing the common interests of Africa in the UNSC

Building on the outcome of the 983rd session of the PSC, the virtual seminar presented the chance to reflect approaches for operationalizing the proposals on enhancing the unified role of the A3 including based on insights from the experiences of recent members of the A3 and the critical place that the AU Permanente Observer Mission to the UN occupies as well as the work of the UNOAU. It was also an opportunity for Amani Africa to launch its special report on the topic – “Making Africa’s voice matter in the UN Security Council: Bridging the gap between ambition and reality in the role of the African three members of the UNSC”.

The Role of the A3 in advancing the common interest of Africa in the UNSC: Bridging the gap between its potential and reality

During its 983rd session, the PSC deliberated on the unified role of the African three elected members (A3) of the United Nations (UN) Security Council (UNSC). This served as an occasion for stock taking and identifying both lessons learned from the experience thus far and proposals on enhancing the role of the A3 and the coordination between the A3 and the PSC. The communique that the PSC issued not only sought to consolidate existing best practices but also crafted new proposals. Both the best practices highlighted for consolidation and the additional proposal that expand beyond existing experiences offer good basis for examining the ways in which the gap between the potential of the A3 in advancing the common interest of Africa and the experience thus far in this respect.

Building on the outcome of the 983rd session of the PSC, Amani Africa convenes a semi-virtual seminar. The seminar seeks to reflect approaches for operationalizing the proposals on enhancing the unified role of the A3 including based on insights from the experiences of recent members of the A3 and the critical place that the AU Permanente Observer Mission to the UN occupies as well as the work of the UNOAU. This will also serve as an occasion during which Amani Africa launches its latest special research report on the same subject.
