UN timeline of diplomatic efforts on South Sudan

21 March 2025

UN Security Council issued a press statement:

  • Condemned in the strongest terms the attack perpetrated on 7 March against the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Nassir county by the White Army.
  • Reiterated that attacks against peacekeepers may constitute war crimes and called for those responsible for the attacks to be held accountable.
  • Underscored that dialogue and negotiation remain the only means for resolving differences.
  • Urged the parties to immediately de-escalate tensions.

26 March 2025

UNMISS called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urgent dialogue between the country’s leaders to de-escalate tensions and restore calm. It also urged all parties to take immediate steps to protect civilians, prevent further displacement, and uphold their commitments under the ceasefire in order to avoid deepening the humanitarian crisis.

27 March 2025

The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan issued an alert over the rapidly escalating crisis in the country, calling for urgent coordinated action to protect civilians and preserve the 2018 peace deal that ended five years of civil war.

UNMISS called on all Parties to exercise restraint and uphold the Revitalized Peace Agreement, following reports of the detention of First Vice President Riek Machar. The Mission warned that unilateral amendments by Parties to the revitalised agreement that jeopardize the hard-won gains of the past seven years risk returning the country back into a state of war.

During a press briefing at the UN headquarters on the situation in South Sudan, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of a ‘perfect storm’ brewing in the country, calling for urgent dialogue, the immediate release of detained officials, and renewed commitment to the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement.

16 April 2025

The UN Security Council held an open briefing on the UN Mission in South Sudan, during which the Head of the Mission, Nicholas Haysom, briefed the Council on the Secretary-General’s latest 90-day report (S/2025/211), covering developments from 16 January to 31 March. Mr. Haysom warned that a sharp deterioration in South Sudan’s political and security situation threatens to undermine the peace gains achieved thus far and risk plunging the country back into war. He called on the Security Council to support efforts to urge all parties to

  • Adhere to the ceasefire and the peace agreement.
  • Reinvigorate the functioning of relevant mechanisms.
  • Release detained military and civilian officials.
  • Exercise restraint and address their differences constructively and through public dialogue.

25 April 2025

UNMISS expressed its deep concern over the reports of clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces and Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in Opposition in Morobo and Yei counties, Central Equatoria State, which have led to civilian displacement and casualties. The Mission appealed to all military actors to refrain from conflict, prioritize the protection of civilians, resolve differences through dialogue, and ensure unimpeded access for peacekeepers to reinforce security.
