In February, Kenya chaired the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC). From the six sessions initially inscribed in the program of work, three were removed. Following the addition of a session not initially envisaged, the PSC held four sessions during the month.

In January, Ghana, under the leadership of Ambassador Amma A. Twum-Amoah, was the Chair of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC). Council’s initial programme of work for the month envisaged four sessions.

In December, Ethiopia was the Chair of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC). The provisional program of work of the month envisaged four sessions. Following the removal of one of the planned sessions and the addition of another not initially envisaged in the provisional program of work, the PSC convened four during the month. Although the initial programme of work envisaged a session on the relationship between South Sudan and Sudan including the status of Abyei, the session did not take place. On the other hand, the PSC added as new agenda to its program of work the consideration of the conclusions of the high-level seminar held in Oran, Algeria.

In November, Egypt chaired the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC). Eight sessions were convened during the month. PSC’s initial programme of work for the month envisaged six sessions. The revised programme of work which guided Council’s activities throughout the month introduced few changes including the addition of substantive sessions.

In October, Mozambique chaired the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC). In total, nine sessions were convened during the month. While the initial programme of work for the month envisaged seven substantive sessions, there were changes introduced in the course of the month.

Chad assumed chairship of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) in September. In total, eight sessions were convened throughout the month. Although Council planned to convene a session to consider strategic priorities for the utilization of the AU Peace Fund and the zero draft African consensus paper on financing AU-led peace support operations (PSOs) through UN assessed contributions, that session was postponed to October. On the other hand, two of Council’s sessions took place outside of the programme of work to address the emergency situation in Guinea, following the coup of 5 September 2021.

During August, the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) convened a total of eight substantive sessions under the chairship of Cameroon. Out of these, one was convened at ministerial level while the remaining were held at ambassadorial level. Of the total substantive sessions convened during the month, two addressed country specific situations whereas the remaining six focused on thematic issues.
