Chad assumed chairship of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) in September. In total, eight sessions were convened throughout the month. Although Council planned to convene a session to consider strategic priorities for the utilization of the AU Peace Fund and the zero draft African consensus paper on financing AU-led peace support operations (PSOs) through UN assessed contributions, that session was postponed to October. On the other hand, two of Council’s sessions took place outside of the programme of work to address the emergency situation in Guinea, following the coup of 5 September 2021.

During April, the PSC was chaired by Djibouti. In total, five substantive sessions were convened during the month. Out of these, only one was thematic while the rest were country specific sessions dedicated to situations in the central Africa and east and horn of Africa regions. All sessions convened during the month took place at ambassadorial level.

The monthly Programme of Work of the PSC initially envisaged only two substantive sessions and a meeting to consider the report on its activities and peace and security in Africa. However, Council convened an additional session around the end of the month, which was committed to the theme ‘elections in Africa’.
